Three by the numbers
At his recent annual check up, Logan was able to prove that we really hadn't imagined his growth spurt at all! He's now a nifty 38 inches tall and 32 pounds. That puts him at the 75th percentile amongst boys his age for height, and 50th for weight. A year ago, he was only 34 inches and 26 pounds. Its not just physical growth either. Logan is clearly maturing beyond toddler into 'kid.' Yes, sometimes its "can he already been 13?!" kid and other times its "wow, did he really just say that?" kid. He's a thinker. He seems to mull things over in his head, then spits out his assessment when you least expect it. You'll think he didn't hear or notice something that occurs around him, but then later - sometimes weeks or even months - he'll bring it up again.
He's got a solid sense of humor giving him the ability to both take and give teasing. He likes to be silly. He also likes to be affectionate. He's quick to volunteer phrases like "I love you," "You're the greatest," and as he recently told Grandma "You make my heart happy."
We're finding the best way to keep him out of mischief is to let him be a helper. He LOVES to be a 'big kid' that helps out with 'big kid stuff.' For example, he gardens - not just helping with the big garden, but also tending to his own three vegetable plants on the side of the house. He just picked his first cucumber and proudly ate it with dinner.
He cooks also. No longer set aside with his own bowl of dry ingredients to play with, Logan gets right into making our actual meal/baking experiment. I help him by premeasuring his ingredients and then he pours them in, mixes, arranges, whatever the recipe calls for. As we cook we practice some hands on basic math. We talk about how four of the 1/4 cups equal one big cup, for example. In small ways it pays off. He is able to do some simple math if he can visualize it. In other words, if he can see two items and you hand him three more, he can tell you that he now has five. The slight pause gives clue that he's counting them out in his head, but you'd not know it otherwise. He subtracts this way too. Its neat to watch him figure it out.
He's still dabbling with his reading. He can sound out words when he wants to, but more often than not he's happy enough just letting someone else read to him. He enjoys the cuddle time that comes with a good book and truth be told, so do we. His favorite stories are beginning to involve more words, less pictures. Its fun getting into books with actual plot lines. ;)
His favorite thing to pitch in and help us with, however, is the care of his sister. He's always trying to hug her and make her laugh. It works too. Megan worships him. Just the slighest attention from him can send her into a fit of giggles. He is starting to act like the little Dad though. As I cooked dinner tonight I heard him in the living room scold her for taking his beloved Wendy Waters Rescue Hero. "Now, Megan Rose," he said sternly, "That is my toy. We don't take toys without asking and saying please. Say please. Say it. . ."
And Megan just giggled.
