Our church starts Sunday School at 2 years old. Logan, however, decided to join that group about 4 months early. Just before Easter, he and I spent a Sunday morning patroling the hall for a fish tank - the church school wing is used during the week for our nursery school. He found a tank - in the 2&3 year old class. Before the hour was done he had earned himself an invite from the teacher to attend as often as he wanted the rest of the year. He made arts and crafts, he had snacks, he played in the indoor sandbox. And then today he "graduated."After today's classes the entire Sunday School met in the gym and had a little ceremony recognizing their particpation for the year. We've been going to the earliest Sunday morning service so the group was small. Logan sat with Daddy at the ceremony waiting for the 'big people church' to finish up. The whole Sunday School sang songs and at the end of each one Logan clapped and said "YAY! Sing another song."
Luckily they did for a while. When the parents started arriving, everyone settled in for the big 'ceremony.' Logan (with Daddy holding his hand) got up with the 2&3 year old class he promoted himself into and stood smiling at the crowd while the Assoc. Pastor let each one say their name into the microphone and then the Superintendent handed each child a hot pink Certificate of Partipcipation. Logan clutched his paper proudly and although he'd show it off to anyone that asked to see it, he'd not let it go.
He walked over to wear I was standing with his grandparents and he said "Wow. There a lot of people." He decided then that there was no need to wait for cake. He ushered us outside. . .yet when we got in the car he said "No! Go church again!"
"Well, Logan," I explained, "Church is over for today we'll go next week."
"Go another church" he said - as if we'd spend our day church hopping so he could sing songs and play in the sandbox.
